VirtualBox Audio: No Windows Sounds
You
have Windows installed as the guest operating system on your Ubuntu
Linux PC but you hear no Windows Sounds.
I came across the same issue and all it boiled down to was making a
couple of "Settings" adjustments in VirtualBox.
Before
you start your WinXP virtual machine, you have to tell VirtualBox to
"Enable Audio" from the the host OS to the guest OS in menu...
Settings -> Audio
I
got mine to work by setting "Host Audio Driver" to ALSA Audio Driver
and "Audio Controller" to ICH AC97. You might have different hardware
drivers so yours might have to be set differently. Adjust to
different settings until you hear the Windows sounding off at start up.

NOTES:
If
it still doesn't work, then your Windows virtual machine may not
support the Linux hardware driver that is being passed through.
If
it's music CDs you want to play, then just play them natively in Linux.
They play smoother without having to be passed through to the guest
operating system.
If it's sounds you want to hear on the
internet, shame on you for even browsing the internet using your
Windows Internet Explorer.
Remember, VirtualBox is intended solely for the operation of
software which you can't run in a Linux environment.
