Internet Explorer: Viewing Offline Web Pages

(Please click on Legal Stuff before using this Tip of The Week.)

Do you have a favorite website you'd like to view offline?

Offline viewing allows you to see a website when your computer is not connected to the internet. This is convenient for users who have dialup internet access or maybe want to view their favorite website on their laptop when they're not able to access an internet connection. If you have cable broadband or DSL with an "always on" connection, then this feature is probably not for you.

Setting Offline Viewing is fairly easy and here's how:

1. First you need to be connected to the internet and then find a website that you'll want to add to your Internet Explorer "Favorites".

(Click for full size)

2. Click the menu "Favorites" and then click on "Add to Favorites...".

(Click for full size)

3. Click the "Make available offline" checkbox and then click the "Customize" button to start the "Offline Favorite Wizard".

(Click for full size)

4. Click the "Next" button to go to the next dialog box of the "Offline Favorite Wizard".

(Click for full size)

5. If the website your making available for offline viewing contains links to other websites, you can decide if you want to make those other websites also available for offline viewing by selecting one of the "Yes" or "No" checkboxes. You should also decide how many links deep you'll want to download for offline viewing by selecting a value in in the "Download Pages..." selection.

NOTE: If you select "Yes>" for the other websites and select more than one or two links deep option, it will take up additional space from your hard disk drive.

6. Click the "Next" button to go to the next dialog box of the "Offline Favorite Wizard".

(Click for full size)

7. Decide how you would like to synchronize this page by selecting one of the radio button options. You can select to manually synchronize from the "Tools" menu or set up a "Schedule". 8. Click the "Next" button to go to the next dialog box of the "Offline Favorite Wizard".

(Click for full size)

9. Click the "No" radio button if your website does not require a passwor or click the "Yes" radio button if it does require a password. 10. Click the "Finish" button and then click the "Ok" button to close the "Add to Favorites..." dialog window.

(Click for full size)

11. Finally, click on menu "Tools" and select "Synchronize..." and then click the "Synchronize" button in the resulting dialog window as shown below to download your website for offline viewing.
