Do you want to speed up the performance of your Windows XP Home or Professional Editions? Here's another in a series of Windows XP Speed Tips.
Windows XP keeps a record of every file on the hard disk just to make for faster searches. The downside is that by indexing all files on the hard disk, other normal file commands like open, close, minimize, etc, will be slower. If you don't find yourself making a lot of searches on your hard drive then you may want to consider turning this feature off.
1. Open "My Computer".
2. Right-click on your "C Drive" and select "Properties". This will display the Properties dialog windows.
(Click for full size)
3. Clear the checkmark from the "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching" checkbox and click the "Ok" button. This will launch the "Confirm Attribute Changes" dialog window.
(Click for full size)
4. Select the "Apply changes to C:\, subfolders and files" radio button and then click the "Ok" button.
This operation may take several minutes to complete but be patient. After it has completed you will enjoy slightly faster performance from your Windows XP Home or Professional Edition operating system.
Enjoy!
