Windows Vista: EZBack-it-up No Longer Displays Log Files



You recently upgraded your PC to Windows Vista or purchased a new PC with Vista pre-installed but now your EZBack-it-up software no longer displays your backup log files.

I've already encountered this problem. Vista's increased security permissions won't allow foreign programs to access its own protected programs such as Notepad. Here's how I used a work-around to fix this issue.

1. Please CLICK HERE to read our disclaimer before getting started. Be sure to read through this entire article before you actually start and if you DO NOT feel comfortable performing these steps, then STOP and DO NOT PROCEED any further.

2. Uninstall EZBackitup if you have already installed it using the default path provided in the installation wizard.

3. Install EZBackitup into your own user home folder instead of the default "C:\Windows\Program Files\EZBackitup" by changing the default path during the installation. This gives you sufficient file privileges to modify the EZBackitup.ini file in the next step.

4. Modify and save the "C:\Users\..\EZBackitup\EZBackitup.ini" file's "LogProgram=" line to read...

LogProgram="C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe"

NOTE: The ".." in the installation path represents your user name in Vista.

5. Open your EZBack-it-up program, click menu "Log -> Log options" and enter the following in the Log file viewer line...

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe

TIP: To keep your logfiles simple, change the Log option to "Summary".

6. Click the "OK" button, close your EZBack-it-up program, reopen it, launch a backup job, and then check for your log files.
