Will Your Windows 98 Upgrade to XP?

It
seems you not only have to jump through hoops to verify that your
computer will upgrade to Windows XP, but it also helps if you are
a Microsoft Certified Engineer prior to performing an XP upgrade.
For the
second time this year we ran into a problem when upgrading
a client's computer from Windows 98 to Windows XP.
Microsoft's
XP "upgrade" disk is supposed to work on a Windows 98 computer simply
by
inserting it into the CD drive, rebooting your computer,
and the installation is supposed to offer you the "upgrade"
option.
However, in this case the Windows XP Home Edition upgrade disk failed
to "see" the existing installation of Windows 98 and asked us to insert
a Windows 98 CD or Startup disk to verify product eligibility.
Then it only offered to perform a "new" installation instead of
the usual "upgrade". That "new" installation option will wipe
out all existing installed software and personal files.
The documentation included with Windows XP Upgrade Edition makes no
mention of this issue whatsoever. This leaves the average user at
a loss for a
solution except to call one of the Indian Microsoft support engineers.
Now the average user has to work with "Habib" and hope to
God they can work through the language barriers.
After further research, we found a workaround
solution that allowed an "upgrade" installation and
preserved most of the client's installed software, files and
settings. Even so, the client still has to download new drivers and reinstall some of their software and hardware.
All in all, you may want to reconsider before upgrading that older Windows 98 computer to Windows XP.
We can custom build a new computer with Windows XP or even
Linspire Linux if you are tired of fighting worms, trojans, spyware,
and viruses. Plus we're right here in Kerrville and we won't send you to India to deal with "Habib".
