How Can I Set Up an Auto-Reply in Outlook Express?
This process is a simple way to set up an auto-reply rule when you plan to be out of the office for an extended period of time. All you need to do is create a simple text file with your out-of-office reply text and then set up an Outlook Express rule. Here's how...

1. Open your "My Documents" folder.
2. Right-Click and select "New -> Text Document" to create a new text document.
3. Type a new name of the text document to something like "vacation.txt".

(Note: You can leave off the ".txt" if your system is set to NOT show the three-letter file extensions)

4. Add into "vacation.txt" the message you want to send when you're out of the office.
5. Open Outlook Express.
6. Click "Tools -> Options" and make sure that "Check for messages..." is checked.
7. Click "Tools -> Message Rules -> Mail".
8. In the "Conditions" section, checkmark the "For All Messages" checkbox.
9. In the "Actions" section, checkmark the "Reply with message" checkbox.
10. In the "Rule Description" section, click on the "message" hyperlink.
11. In the "Open" dialog box, change the "Files of type" to "Text(*.txt)".
12. Select the "vacation.txt" file you created in in steps 1-4 above and click "Open".
13. Click the "Ok" button on the remaining "Message Rules" dialog windows.

Don't forget to leave your PC running with Outlook Express minimized to your taskbar. Otherwise, the message rule won't function while you're out of the office.

When you return from your well-deserved vacation, you can turn off this rule by clicking menu "Tools -> Message Rules" and removing the checkmark from your new rule.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure your PC is connected to a high-quality uninterruptible power supply or surge suppressor before leaving it turned on for extended periods of time. Lightning travels fast and takes the path of least resistance.

How long can men thrive between walls of brick, walking on asphalt pavements, breathing the fumes of coal and of oil, growing, working, dying, with hardly a thought of wind, and sky, and fields of grain, seeing only machine-made beauty, the mineral-like quality of life?
~Charles A. Lindbergh (1902 - 1974)

Man must feel the earth to know himself and recognize his values.... God made life simple.  It is man who complicates it.
~Charles A. Lindbergh (1902 - 1974)
