That's why this newsletter is not just full of computer-related information, but also includes entertainment and educational items to tickle the brain cells. There's something of interest for everyone in here so feel free to share this issue and pass it along to your friends and family...

What's In Here?

Lots of cool, fun, and informative stuff every week!

I'm dubbing this week's issue the President Woodrow Wilson Edition. On this day in 1914, the anti-protectionist Underwood-Simmons Act was passed by Congress and subsequently signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson. It was enacted as an across-the-board reduction in tariffs, making manufacturers more efficient and providing consumers with competitive pricing. To compensate for lost revenue, a rider to the act called the Revenue Act mandating the first tax on incomes over $3,000.

Our Ctrl-Alt-Backspace section includes special click-links to transport you to educational and informational websites about Woodrow Wilson.

Internet Explorer 7 Update Advisory
I know this is going to turn into one of those "You can't say I didn't warn you" situations, so you should read this advisory very carefully. Otherwise, someone's going to get caught short and wish they had paid attention to this advisory.

Microsoft is going to push Internet Explorer 7 as a priority update. While it boasts many so-called "new" features, actually modeled after many Linux-based and Mac PCs, you'll need to watch out and be careful of this one.

As a system administrator or private-party PC owner you need to get ready fast. Because if you run automatic updates, this purportedly more secure Internet Explorer 7 will all on its own update in November, and might break things. So the time has come to TEST, TEST, and TEST some more with all your existing applications and make sure that your employees do not update it on their own. If you are a private PC owner then you'll also want to be diligent and careful. You might have critical software that you depend on for medical, financial, or other critical requirements and you want to make sure you don't get caught short.

Many applications are not supporting it yet, for instance one software vendor warned that their VPN product does not support IE7. It's still not known just how many applications are expected to be affected so Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom (sic), has released an IE7 Blocker toolkit to prevent premature update.

Don't you find it a little bit ironic and frightening that Microsoft itself, is issuing a blocker toolkit against one of its very own flagship products?

Here is the Microsoft announcement and it also makes sense to read the FAQ:

http://secunia.com/advisories/22477/

In particular, those of you who are running any PC remote control software should seriously consider installing the IE7 Blocker Toolkit. If you don't know how, or are not inclined to do so yourself, give my office a call at 895-5016 to set up an on-site appointment so you won't get caught by surprise when things start to break.

There, now you can't say you haven't been warned.

I would never read a book if it were possible for me to talk half an hour with the man who wrote it.

I not only use all the brains that I have, but all that I can borrow.
~Woodrow Wilson (December 28, 1856 – February 3, 1924)

And finally, does this quote sound familiar? Even back then...

The government, which was designed for the people, has got into the hands of the bosses and their employers, the special interests.  An invisible empire has been set up above the forms of democracy.
~Woodrow Wilson (December 28, 1856 – February 3, 1924)
